Apple is working on a fingerprint scanner that could be the company’s next flagship smartphone, according to a new report.

The company is said to be developing a device that will have a 3D-touch sensor, allowing users to swipe the screen with their finger and tap the fingerprint sensor.

Apple has said that the technology will be used in the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. The report from the Wall Street Journal says that the sensor will allow users to unlock their iPhones with their fingerprint while the screen is off, though it’s not clear if the sensor is actually capable of that.

The scanner would be capable of detecting the position of the finger on the screen and allowing users with that finger to unlock the device.

Apple’s announcement about the technology was made at a developer conference, though the company declined to comment on specific details of the technology.

The Journal also reports that the company is planning to release a smaller version of the device, which will feature a “3D fingerprint sensor.”
